I trust pain

Every day, we blindly trust in a lot of things. We trust that the force of gravity will keep our feet grounded, that our tires will be pumped up, that the bus will be on schedule, that the market will have eggs. We don’t stop to think that maybe our coworker is ill or that the bookstore has run out of that title. However, at the same, time we find it hard to trust in people, selflessness, time or even our own feelings, to name a few.

A few weeks ago, I found a picture posted of a sign that read “I trust pain”. It hit me like a wave. I thought “Yes, I do trust pain” and I hadn’t even think of it like that before. I trust pain, so I wrote a bit about it.

I trust the harmful stimuli,
the reactions of my receptors,
the electrical signals
running through my nerves
from my skin to my brain.

I trust this connection
with the world
that makes me feel alive
and ignites the synapses of my neurons.

I trust the certainty of my reflex response,
the force of resisting it
and the pleasure it brings.

I trust the beating of my heart,
pumping blood unevenly,
the redness of my skin,
and the wetness between my legs.

I trust pain.
